Ive seen a lot of things in rescue, that have stayed to haunt me but I think this is my worst.
A beautiful staffie girl sitting in the pound. Hiding in the shadows. I was told she was dangerous and not to touch her. Of course I didn't listen. I slowly went in to greet her. At first she growled but I just turned my back to her and sat on the floor. I had a take away cup of tea in my hand and started to drink it, then put it down next to me for her to see. I put on my squeaky dog voice that they always respond to. Within a few moments she was sneaking up to me to check me out. Her huge brown eyes glowed like diamonds. She was stunning.
She slowly started to drink my tea. I put out my hand to let her smell me and all she did was cower to the ground. She was so afraid.
Funny how she was dangerous. More like a big slob.
I walked out to ask what was her story. The wardens told me she killed a dog and bit her owner. I bet there is two sides to this story. Pity she cant talk. But I can guess what happened.
To say I begged for her life is an understatement. My heart broke for the wardens who have never said no to me. They saw her with me and knew i was right. Shes not a bad dog, just had a bad owner.
Under law she must be put to sleep. There was so many involved from the owner of her that wanted her put to sleep but also the owner of the dog she killed.
I knew I had no hope….
I returned to her cell and held her in my arms and told her ive named you rainbow.
I sat with her for an hour. She got so playful and loving.
Then I had to say good bye. The hardest thing ive ever done in my life. Never in my life have I held a death row dog I couldn't save.
I'm soul destroyed.
A part of me wishes I never met her.
So sorry Rainbow, I promised I tried.
You have died for another human error. When will this god dam human race learn. Animals are not like broken toys….to dispose of when you see fit.
So angry and hurt. I feel like I failed her.

For those looking for a means to donate to AHAR, we are currently running a prize draw for this lovely gold ladies watch. Both the strap and the watch are 9 carat gold and it is as new, having only ever been worn once since being purchased for £279 (sterling) eight years ago.
The draw will be taking place on Monday evening (7th October) and you can buy one or multiple tickets (at a cost of €10 each) for the gold watch prize draw at this link – http://on.ahar.ie/watch
This is a great way of donating to AHAR and potentially winning a beautiful gold watch in return.
All proceeds from the draw will go to the capital fund for the purchase of permanent premises for our new AHAR Rescue Centre. At the moment we are based in rented accommodation and the new property, on which we have already put down a deposit, is a fabulous former equestrian centre comprising 28 stables, many other outbuildings and 30 acres of lands. As well as giving AHAR our very own and much needed forever home, it will allow us to rescue and re-home even more thousands of dogs, horses and other animals each year.

This gorgeous little fella was found in Tesco car park in Newcastlewest by one of our very kind supporters. We have been unable to find his owners, so now he is up for rehoming. He is a lovely dog, just wants cuddles and loving.
If you are interested in him please phone Oonagh on 0871356940 as he is in Newcastlewest, he is not with us.
And please SHARE.

He is three years old. Just a bag of bones. Thanks to a good friend he is now safe at AHAR. Have a good look at him. Next time you see him, I promise…. you wont believe its the same dog.
I have called him Salvavit. Latin for saved.
Please if you would like to offer him a safe foster home (with a view to adopt him)where he can recover, contact us. He is a pure baby, just wants to be loved. I adore this boy.
