    Help Us to Claim €2,500!

This is how much we have been promised by a very generous donor if we get to 250 ‘Friends of AHAR Patrons’ by the end of July. We are currently at 216 Patrons so we have 28 days left in which to get the remaining 34.

You can become a Friends of AHAR Patron by making a donation of €100 or more via the following link http://on.ahar.ie/patron – or send a cheque/postal order to Georgia Murray, AHAR Treasurer, Knockatagglemore, Kilcummin, Killarney, Co Kerry. If you wish, you may record your Patronage in memory of a relative or pet.

The Patrons Scheme has been the corner-stone of our fundraising towards the Purchase Fund for the new AHAR Welfare Centre from the outset. We appreciate that money is tight for many and are so grateful for every contribution we receive, however big or small, but if you have been thinking about becoming a Patron and not quite done it yet, if you are already a patron and can afford a second donation to pay tribute to a family member or a pet, or if you can get a group of family, friends or colleagues together to sign up collectively as a Patron, now is the time.

Please share this appeal wide and far, and please also post here if you are planning on becoming a Patron later this month. We really need your support on this one – effectively each of your €100 donations will become €164 for AHAR if we can get to 250 Patrons this month!!!

We got a great initial response to our “The 39 Steps Challenge” last night, with 5 immediate sign ups, so our sincere thanks to Lauraleen O’Connor, Jenny Ford, Rochelle & Daniel Gregory (to honour their beloved mare Doran), Carol Carty and Aine Keane (for Geordi RIP & Bailey RIP).

We are therefore now looking for 34 more ‘Friends of AHAR Patrons’ to sign up this month for a minimum donation of €100. If we can achieve that figure by the end of July, which will mean a total of 250 patrons, then we will receive an additional €2,500 from a very generous (anonymous) donor. That would be an AMAZING boost to our fund-raising efforts so please help us however you can – donating yourself, getting a group of family, friends or colleagues together to donate collectively or even just sharing among your Facebook friends.

Once we have moved into our new premises, all Patrons will be presented with a personal Patron’s Certificate and will be acknowledged on our Patron’s Wall which will be located in the reception area of our new property. And, of course, all funds raised through the Friends of AHAR Patrons Scheme will be used towards the purchase of the property.

We have climbed the first 5 steps in 'The 39 Steps Challenge' – please help to climb the remaining 34!!

One for the Ladies of Kerry! Just a quick update on one of the fundraisers being run by a great supporter of AHAR, Annette Roche, who is holding a 'Hoofs & Paws, Mane & Tail Day' in her Indulge Beauty and Ballybeg Hair Salon in Ballybeggan, Tralee on Friday 12th July. All proceeds on the day will go to AHAR – no appointment is necessary but you can call/text 083 4129386 to secure a booking in advance (the Salon will be open from 10.00am to 5.00pm on Friday 12th). Available treatments will be wash & blow dry €10, nail paints €5, nail file & paint €7, 2-week manicure €15. Refreshments and treats will be available to visitors!

Well the exciting news is that star Kerry footballer Kieran Donaghy will be attending on the day to draw the raffle winners – tickets can be purchased at the Indulge Beauty and Ballybeg Hair Salon – €3 a line (5 tickets) or €5 for 2 lines – with some great prizes on offer, including lunch for 2 at the garden cafe at the amazing 5* Dunloe Castle, a fabulous Ogra skincare hamper and a hot stone massage followed by a wash & blow dry!!!

So please go along and support this great initiative – and maybe get to meet Kieran Donaghy!

A quick woof of appreciation from Sam the Lab (well as you can see he's actually asleep but he did dictate this earlier!!)

Sam is of course the King of AHAR, still going strong at the age of 18 having been the first pound dog rescued by AHAR many moons ago when he was just a young lab.

And he just wanted to give lots of woof, licks and paws to all those who joined the ‘Sam The Lab Stable Syndicate’, the very first one we launched a few weeks ago – Susy Glossop and Lou O’Leary (who were the ones to come up with the idea), May Crawford, Colleen Reid, Louise Hardwick, Fiona O’Connell, Edy Mattia, Ramona Morris, the O’Shea family, Eva Sobiecka-Durmaj, Barbara Cotter, Cora Evans, Aisling Counihan, Amy Bates, Audrey Mealiff Jean Rowan, Kerry Osborne, Mary Kilmartin, Ciara Kilmartin, Ted Johnson, Fionnula McGinty, Safira & Ruby White, Sue Barclay, Teresa Clatworthy, Lucy Ann Gleeson, Grace Gleeson, Mary Knowles, Pa Knowles, Sandra Collins, Elizabeth Hickey and Liam O’Brien.

HUG – Homes for Unwanted Greyhounds are looking for a home for a lurcher, named Millie, in their care. Can you help? Follow the link for her story and photos.

    Please share.

I would really love a home : Millie
Pretty Millie has been in the care of HUG for 5 months and we would dearly love to find her forever home. She is approx 2 years old, and is a small lurcher standing at 21" high. Millie was originally found wandering in the middle of a busy main road, when a passing motorist managed to stop and get Millie to safety. Despite newspaper and FB appeals, and registration with the Dog Warden, no-one came forward to claim her. Millie is a very lively dog, and can pull on the lead in her eagerness to sniff everything, but this is improving with regular exercise. She looks forward to her country walks, and loves to investigate any movement in the long grass. We think Millie is quite a dominant girl, so she would be best living with a laid back male or even as an only dog where she could have the sofa to herself. She adores fuss and attention, and will happily roll over on her back for tummy rubs with her legs wriggling in the air. It's so sad to still see her in kennels when she would make a lovely pet with the right family. Please consider Millie – she is a sweet dog and gives the best kisses xx If you would like to adopt or foster Millie then please contact us at HUG on info@homesforunwantedgreyhounds.ie or through the FB page.

  • Volunteers needed.
Now that the summer (by name only i think, where is the heat wave? Lol) is here. We are looking for more volunteers. People seem to have more free time with their kids are off school or holidays from work.  Volunteers like Catrion Fenton (who has come from Cork) are life saving to us. …

  • Meet Mary and Tina.
Mary and Tina run Petmania adoption day for AHAR. They also volunteer at the centre, find foster homes, do home checks, find volunteers, are admins on our page and are on our committee.  So… how did we kidnap these two fab girls lol.  …

Another big thank you, this time to Diane and Adrian Wright, who were among the first people to very generously Sponsor a Stable as a donation towards our Purchase Fund for the new AHAR Welfare Centre.

Diane and Adrian live in Somerset, England where they have looked after a number of rescue greyhounds, including Duke, Lady, Misty, Blackie and Lucy. Their dream is to purchase a small holding in about 3 years time to take in old greyhounds and foster rescue animals, and we hope that their dream comes true just as their donation will help to make AHAR’s dream come true.

Diane & Adrian – we hope that you can come across and visit us when we are in our new premises to see the plaque on your very own stable door but be warned! Suzanne might smuggle a couple of lovely greyhounds into the back seat of your car for the journey home! Thank you again from all the AHAR team.

Georgia here, just want to thank all those people who continually put food, blankets, shredded paper and other things into the Ark vets in Killarney. It is much appreciated and it ALL gets used for the dogs or horses or whatever we have at the moment. Except we need more shredded paper please.

I believe so much in the book The Secret. Well yesterday I collected the contents of a kitchen for a coffee shop donated by Katy Falkingham from Dublin for our new premises. It will be put in storage until October.
There is stainless steel counters, pizza oven, shelving, a hob with four rings, cooking trays, pots, and tables.
This is one of the best donations I could dream of. I'm so excited, cant wait till October.
Katy your a star, thank you sooooo much for being such a generous person. Its was fab to meet you . Another face book friend I have met. Cant wait to make you lunch in the future in the new AHAR with your own kitchen lol xx
