Today we went to a car boot sale to raise money for our vet bill. We planned a lovely day with the help of Mary and Pa Knowels. Until we got a call from Mary Fenton to say she had been informed of ten ponies kept in a shed. So i told her to have a look and ring me back. What she found was unbelievable. A filthy shed, 3ft deep in feces. Ten ponies in complete darkness. When she opened the door they all started hitting off the walls the light hurt their eyes so much. The small foals started eating their own feces, there was no food of any kind. They did have a dirty water bath but the water was black from the ponies eating the feces then drinking water. Needless to say we dropped everything and hit the road for Fermoy to meet Mary. By then she had talked to the owner ( an old man who was not able to care for them but too proud to ask for help ) and he had agreed to let us take them. When i got there, my heart broke. All their little faces peeping out of the darkness looking for food. Begging. Licking their lips and smelling our hands. I just couldnt wait to get them out of there but all i had was a double horse box. So thanks to the Fenton family who offered us a field for the seven others while we rushed the three weak foals back to AHAR who need urgent care. Photos next.

Without the influence of bad owners, these dogs are loving affectionate, tolerant, forgiving and gentle dogs and are fantastic with children. In the early part of the 1900's, Pit bulls used to be considered the perfect 'Nanny Dogs' for children. They were considered the most faithful and loving dog of any breed especially with children.

Dogs tied up outside shops can be stolen in the blink of an eye by a gang passing by in a car. Remember these people will drive around specifically looking for dogs who are left unattended. It will only take them seconds to steal your dog while you nip into the shop.

A gang member got these puppies solely to earn him money being torn apart in dog fights. He is already making them wear heavy chains around their necks to begin building their strength. These innocent puppies are already suffering but they know nothing of the future horrors they will have no choice but to face.

Pitbulls are wonderful with people and make great therapy dogs. Here, a nursing home resident is getting a cuddle from a typically affectionate Pit Bull.

Tom here – well I told you this update would be worth waiting for – our Sponsored Walk has to date raised an incredible €7,556 and allied with our other fund-raising efforts (including the Friends of AHAR Patron scheme) we have now raised ……………………………………………….wait for it………………………….

    €38,534 in 8 weeks!

Our target is €100,000 and this will allow us to secure a mortgage on the property and next weekend we will reveal the location of the new centre and share photographs with you, exciting or what??

Remember – Tuesday night (April 30th) at 9pm all our Friends of AHAR Patrons will be in a draw for a 2 night bed and breakfast break (excludes the months of July & August) in The Malton Hotel, Killarney. On April 17th we had 127 Patrons and the hotel gave us an incentive – if we got 13 more Patrons in 13 days they would donate the break to us. Well we blew that challenge out of the water and now have 148 Patrons (21 more in the past 11 days) – check in on Tuesday night to see who comes out of the hat. A big thank you to The Malton for their generosity.

The Jon Kenny concert in the Gleneagle Hotel this coming Saturday May 4th is an important aspect of our fund-raising and we are appealing for your support with this, tickets can be purchased online at http://on.ahar.ie/jonkenny or direct from the Gleneagle Hotel Box Office by ringing 064 66 71555.

PS…if you still have to return your Sponsorship Card please do so as soon as you can so that we can finalise the total.

Never a dull moment – stay with us, Tom

We have been asked to help find this dog a home and it is on the page A Home for Chubbs – We do not have a number so you need to go on that page.

I'm a neutered and micro-chipped 4 year old male Shar Pei. I live in Dublin, but would be happy to travel anywhere around Ireland with my wrinkly head out the car window, so I can smell the world go by.
