Tom here, we are still looking for people to take Sponsorship Cards for our Walk on Sunday April 21st, please send a pm or email me at tom@ahar.ie if you can take one. The Walk is an important fundraiser towards the purchase of the new Rescue Centre and even if you can't walk yourself you can still take a card on our behalf. The Walk starts at 2pm from Ross Castle, Ross Road, Killarney and will be led out by our Patron, musician Sharon Shannon as well as Clyde the dog who came into AHAR in January (with Bonnie the cat) after suffering third degree burns. He is now in fantastic shape and looking forward to the walk!

  • WITNESSING: "Cage Free" Eggs — 1. What Happens to the Roosters?
"I was chosen for a special assignment, in the hatchery. The rooms were silent but for the faint hum of machines, the air hot and humid, so that when we levered out the huge metal trays of newly hatched chicks from the oven-like incubators, the yellow fluff balls chirruped cheerfully. A sea of yellow beings jostled among broken shells. The facility manager had shown me a hatch to swivel open and finish the job. Below it were dumpsters, several already full to the brim. Masses of broken eggshells were heaped in there, among them quite a number of chirruping chicks, very much alive. This was the trash someone would dispose of later. How, I had not been told. Meanwhile, the new crop of broken shells was to be tossed down there, along with the unwanted male chicks and any females I judged too small or weak to meet the standards of the facility. I carried my first tray to the opening. Dozens of living chicks slid into the void. The chicks I'd pitched to the bottom of the dumpster would be crushed or asphyxiated as others were thrown on top of them. I went back to the hatchery chamber, eyes searching for a human face who could reassure me. What I'd done just now was "what was done", wasn't it? It was OK, wasn't it? But there was no one present. A second tray from which I'd extracted the females was on the selection table, ready for disposal. I yanked off my plastic gloves and reached for one of the male chicks and lifted him up in my bare hand. It seemed the right thing to be merciful. Peasants wring chickens' necks, don't they? I edged my fingers into a tight hold round his neck, just below the little bright-eyed face peering back at me. Then I realised I had to get out of there. What kind of place was this? I stood and wept." ~ Victor Schonfeld, director of 'The Animals Film' —————————— From backyard farms to factory farms, egg production begins with the mass killing of male chicks—who are "useless" to egg producers because they don't lay eggs—and ends with the mass killing of their "spent" sisters, who are then replaced with a new group of younger, more "productive", victims whose brothers will have all been killed at the hatchery. Learn more about egg production: The Truth About "Humane" Farming http://www.peacefulprairie.org/the-truth.html The Free Range Myth http://www.peacefulprairie.org/freerange1.html —————————— WITNESSING is a Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary campaign that, through first person accounts from eyewitnesses, investigators, farmers, producers, rescuers and caregivers, aims to take you behind the bucolic facade of the local farms that supply free-range eggs, artisan cheese, organic milk, pasture-fed meat, and other "humane" animal products, and show you the faces of the individuals whose living flesh, mother milk, reproductive cells, skin, feathers and hair are extracted for the sole purpose of meeting your consumer demand. None of these captives wants to die, none of them deserves to die, none of them *has* to die for us to live and thrive. And none of them will die if we simply replace the products of violence with alternatives that do no harm. Its a very sad day in AHAR. Spirit has died. She was one of the weaker ones when she came and yesterday she lay down and just gave up. We tried everything with the vet, but he said she was too long in a desperate situation to recover.
Spirit had a home waiting, she was wanted. Would be loved. This just breaks my heart…. she will never get to see the other side of humans. All she saw was the wicked side.
On a good note, she died in my arms as i hand fed her treats. At least she did not die alone, cold and in pain in a field.
Your free now baby girl, no more pain. Im so sorry we met too late xx

Meet Sam -(currently not in the care of AHAR) Through no fault of owner or dog , Sam is up for rehoming . Sam is the centre of a family and needs a home that would continue this way-he is a peoples dog and would pine if he was not in the midst of all activities . Sam is not so good with small animals so an adult only home with no cats /rabbits would be best.He is ok with other dogs but is very boisterous and energetic .He enjoys mountain climbing and equally enjoys lounging on a sofa . Sam is microchipped , up to date on vaccinations and is being neutered in the morning – He will be ready for a new home mid April once he has recovered from neutering. If interested in Sam please send an email to suzanne@ahar.ie
