Well two weeks after AHAR came and took me off death row in from Kerry pound… i went home today. My real home.
This is my point. Five days in a pound in Ireland…. is not enough. His name is Toby, his owner had posters everywhere. They couldnt find him. They rang everyone, but me. Until they saw him on my page.
Toby would be dead two weeks ago…. unless we came. Unless you donated to keep us going, every day of every year.
Irish laws need to change…. all!!!!!! pounds need to work with rescues!
Every life means something to you and me … not them!
But together… lets change the future of more " Toby's…
    Lets bring them home…

Tom here with a fundraising update. On Friday night last at 7pm we announced plans to purchase and develop a new Animal Rescue Centre. Since then we have received tremendous support and our "Friends of AHAR Patrons Scheme" now has 58 Patrons who have contributed an incredible €7,225.

We also now have over 9,200 Facebook “likes” – an increase of over 1,500 in the past week – you give us fantastic support and encouragement that we truly appreciate.

***** Here is a challenge for the weekend – if just 28 of you get together with family and friends over the weekend and sign up as Patrons it would bring our fund-raising total to €10,000 which would be a major milestone and half the deposit we require.

The other two main fund-raisers we are running in tandem with the Patrons Scheme are the Sponsored Walk (led out by our Patron Sharon Shannon and Clyde) on April 21st and the Jon Kenny concert in the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney on Saturday May 4th and our Target is have raised the €20,000 deposit following the concert and once this is handed over to the Auctioneer we will disclose the location of the property and share photographs with you, I promise you will love it.

We are so determined to make this happen, please walk the dream with us, thank you Tom

Cork Man Jailed for Cruelty to a Horse

A man was jailed for animal cruelty at yesterday’s sitting of Mallow District Court. Donie Kelleher of Millstreet, Co. Cork claimed that he was not the owner of the horse in question at the time of its discovery but Judge Brian Sheridan was not convinced by the accused’s account and imposed a 3 month custodial sentence and a €1000 fine.

The case related to an old grey mare found by Gardaí in a remote forestry area. While there was sufficient grazing and access to water the mare was emaciated as a result of having bad teeth and being unable to eat.

The Gardaí called in ISPCA Inspector Lisa O’Donovan and local enquiries were made to locate the owner of the mare. Mr. Kelleher was identified as the owner but claimed that he had sold the animal on 6 months previously. However, he refused to disclose the identity of the buyer to Gardaí.

As Mr. Kelleher would not comply with the Gardaí’s instructions or requests for information the mare was seized and taken into the care of the ISPCA. Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated after her rescue and the horse was humanely euthanized on veterinary advice due to a range of medical issues.

The veterinary findings suggested that the animal’s health problems would have been ongoing for in excess of a year.
“This is an extremely sad reflection of the value placed on living beings” remarked Inspector O’Donovan, “This mare had seemingly served her purpose and was abandoned in this area to fend for herself. It was clear she was losing body condition due to the fact that she was unable to eat without discomfort. This sort of behaviour is unacceptable and unforgivable. We have a lifetime responsibility towards animals in our care.”

Chief Inspector Conor Dowling commented “It is unfortunate that there is not a positive outcome for this poor horse but at least we can feel that justice has been served and the person responsible held accountable. The ISPCA would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the Gardaí involved in bringing this case to a successful conclusion. They put an enormous amount of effort into securing this conviction”.

Good night all, Tom here. I will update you on our fundraising progress tomorrow night at around 7pm (one week after we announced our plans to purchase and develop a new Animal Rescue Centre for AHAR). We have had a great week in terms of donations and "likes" so please continue to like and share our posts. The more of our "likes" that sign up as Patrons the closer we get to the €20,000 deposit on what will become our new home. Once we have that deposit we will name the location and share pictures with you, it is only fantastic! Consider linking in with family or friends to become a Friends of AHAR Patron (wouldn't it be a lovely Mothers Day gift?), you will be directly contributing to safeguaring Animal Welfare and AHAR into the future, thank you for sharing our journey towards a better future for animals acroos the country.
